195: The Year in Beer 2018

It is that time of year again. A time to sit back a reflect on all that has gone on in our lives over the last 365 days. We are no different here on the show, as we look back on the year in beer, twenty eighteen. First, beer brags. Jeremy has a few Eddies and Michael goes over his Christmas beers that he had from a tiny little thimble (the bourbon barrel-aged tripel comes out on top). Next, we dip into the American Pale Male Mail Pail where Counsel of the Show brings some formality to the proceedings. Jeremy rebuts. We talk more about the uncanny Christmas Claymation special before going into are year end awards. Who will win Best Adjunct in a Supporting Role? Best Beer Name? Lest we forget about Beer of the Year at that! Stay awhile and listen.

It is our Christmas episode, and we give about as much fanfare as we would care to. Michael reveals a beer bomb, which might spell doom in the future. Jeremy brags about unique brew he had at a loaded pizzeria. Michael unleashes a quiz about television Christmas specials, which leads to a rant on the California Raisins. For the FDR, we celebrate with an aptly named brew, but is it apt for the season?

Then he reminiscences back to Simpler Times, the beer, in a foray into the Trader Joe's store brand offerings. Michael retorts with a brag on Central Waters' Oktoberfest. After all beer talk, we switch over to coffee talk, as it was vital to Jeremy's success in the Film Scream horror movie marathon. Jeremy summarizes the films and his experience. Finally, we move on to the FDR, where a beer that was "set up for failure", manages to impress. Within the conversation, we postulate a bourbon apple pie and recall that time we all had cigars.

Where he indulged in Germans such as Hack-Pschorr and Warsteiner, as well as indulging in some La Trappe. Plus, an auxillary brag about Carlsberg Elephant. Michael went to a Pumpkin Chuck that was sadly cut short, but he managed to have an oktoberfest and an scotch ale. Also, he finally gets to add an addendum to Jeremy's beer brag from last year for Atomic Pumpkin. All this talk is sprinkled with Red Hots, Hot Tamales, and other cinnamon candy. We open up the American Pale Male Mail Pail to some Brews News about declining sales in American macros followed by Jeremy issuing a "correction". Finally, we get to the FDR, where we step outside Bavaria for a different type of German beer.

Remember the days of pre-big head Baldwin? I barely did. Jeremy brags about Octobot 3000, an imperial Oktoberfest of sorts. Michael plays catch-up by also imbibing the Sierra Nevada/Weihenstephan Oktoberfest collaboration. We then get into homebrew talk. Michael gives an update on the recipe that Jeremy devised for him then discusses a sweet, husk-ridden treat. Finally, it all devolves into zymurgy. Michael pulls a quiz from the internet, where we do not remember remember the Fifth of November. And lastly, it is FDR time, where an ancient Irish legend lends its name to a brew.

Officially back in the studio, we kick it off with some beer brags. Jeremy finds joy in a Kolsch from Surly, whereas Michael had an amber he didn't really like that much and a weird gose at pub trivia. Michael quizzes Jeremy with tiebreaker questions before opening up the American Pale Male Mail Pail. We discuss TG brewing for HV, then discuss a video from a popular YouTube franchise involving cheap American Beer. Finally, we get into the FDR where we go back to Reunion again. 177: Disastercast

Yes, this title is similar to an earlier episode... we sort of piecemealed this one together. This is a couple of live recordings stitched together with studio interstitials. Caveats abound we jump into Jeremy and a goosey Michael talking Phantasm while watching a wrestling match. We still manage to be moderately successful at some Mikes vs. Machine trivia and we even sneak in an FDR. After cutting away, we return to a brief recording at the Sanctuary in Iowa City, where we are wrapping up spinning yarns over some Oktoberfest beer. I guess it is another FDR. Why not?

175: Return of the Book Club

Ah, most of this episode revolves around us discussing the book Barrel-Aged Stout and Selling Out by Josh Noel. We do manage to get in beer brags at the beginning, but even an exceptional FDR is overshadowed by our enthusiasm. It of in itself is tangentially related to the book. Also included is an informal poll Jeremy conducted in response to what he read.

Beer in this episode: Orval

Monday, August 6, 2018

174: Duck, Duck, Grey Duck

Uh oh. We wade into "current" events as Jeremy's beloved Toppling Goliath pulls a jerk move. But before that, beer brags. Michael had a refreshing Amarillo hopped summer beer and some Old Engine Oil. Jeremy touts some brews he had while at trivia, including the 2015 vintage of Breakfast Stout. Michael entices Jeremy by giving a sneak peek at the first few chapters of Barrel-Aged Stout and Selling Out. Then we talk Toppling Goliath vs. Thew, without expertise, or really arriving at a precise conclusion. Finally, it is time for the FDR, which comes with a few diversions - a pop quiz and a podcast pitch.

173: Podcast-A-Rita

We get in too deep in this ep, unraveling the conspiracies of the brewing industry. But first! Beer brags. Michael had a locally made tripel and Jeremy had BCBS. This leads into Goose Island chat then subsequently opening the door to the cellar where the walls are covered in bulletin boards laden with photos, articles, and yarn connecting them all. Next up, donuts and the Simpsons. Followed by, the FDR... which happens to be part of our bulletin board. There is no escape.

172: Dunk the 5

This episode is all about beer. Yes. Michael kicks it off with a elite beer brag of Gulden Draak that did not taste like he last recalled. Jeremy replies with his own brag, which is not a dubbel, not a tripel, but a quadrupel beer brag, going through the status Broken Elbow Ale, an update on Brut IPAs, a sessionable Russian imperial stout, and finally ending with a limited edition Kolsch from New Belgium. This leads into two articles, both on tasting and ranking brews: one from hardworking landscapers and the other with brewmasters. Next is the FDR, where a stout from a flat state gives us a debate.

171: Salty, Soury, Celeryey

Things get weird in this one. Michael starts off with a beer brag, finally getting his hands on a Brut IPA, this one from Working Draft. Very interestingly weird. Jeremy one ups the weirdness by having a notable gose from Pipeworks. Michael clocks in as an investigative journalist and attends a weird beer event. Jeremy pitches a couple of podcasts and then talks weird explotation films. Finally, it is time for the FDR and through some weirding, we are having a winter seasonal brew in the middle of summer.

How will it fare against the original? The week in geek returns with talk about SOLO (bolo), leading into an impromptu Jerembacca on the Aisle movie discussion. GLOW is recommended and so are a couple of podcasts as the Podcast Pitch also makes a sudden return. We run some errata on Brut IPAs, then get into the FDR. It was one "Hell" of a time. Blarf.

169: Rullepølse Analogy

Michael has a bittersweet beer brag/lamentation as he scores a victory in the penultimate trivia session hosted at his usual trivia spot. Meanwhile, Jeremy touts supreme on his beer from Oregon, including a new beer style, the Brut IPA. Will it sweep the nation like the Juicy IPA. Next, we check into the American Pale Male Mail Pail, where Mike sparks a conversation about lawnmower beers. Finally, it is time for the FDR. With an arsenal of analogies, we manage to break this one down.

168: Freakazoid Lemon Thing

Always record. Michael briefly brags about the non-alcoholic Clausthaler he tried, before Jeremy gets into an extended brag about his trip to Alaska. Here he reveals the wonky world of Alaskan laws that apply to breweries, various destinations he went to, and of course the brews that he tried there. Michael queries him on the wildlife, sunlight, and weather. Next we move on to the FDR, where we continue our Super Summerian Series, trying out seasonal brews.

Fortunately, it did not keep him away from brews completely as he beer brags about a coffee stout from Reunion that he had. Michael comes back with his own beer brag, a tequila barrel aged cream ale (?) from Mobcraft. Next, we talk about the 10 worst beers as per vinepair.com and riff on our experiences with those. Finally it is off to the FDR, where we finally catch up with Haze Craze on the show.

Then Steve challenges Michael to eat a doubled Mega Stuf Oreo and it is gross. Next, we get into the FDR that features a beer from Ommegang's Game of Throne series. We hit up beer brags where Michael is having a flowery IPA and Steve recounts PC Pils as an antidote for wrangling with an umbrella. Next, Steve changes his name to Mike so we can bring back Mike's vs. Machine. Take that, Machine! Will our heroes triumph? Next we get into a the FDR, which merges each of our favorite styles. Infusion-Ha! Emergency Show! Crazy neighbor of the show Steve joins Michael for a special episode where they try infusing with some brews in a French press. But before that, we start with beer brags as not to change things up too much. Michael had a spicy pastry stout, whereas Steve reminisces sipping on his last Hopslam. Next, it is the return of the Oreo review! Does the Mega Stuf offer enough creme units on the Oreo linear regression curve? Finally, we get into an extended FDR session where we infuse Sierra Nevada Pale ale with various ingredients. Will it revitalize a standard brew or is this Morth Borsted™?

Jeremy counters with his own brag of a dubbel and a tripel from Great River. Next we open the American Pale Male Mail Pail, reading some thoughts from former co-host of the show Mike. Would cereal make a good beer infusion? Next, it's Brews News, breaking down George Washington's beer recipe and a corresponding marketing ploy. We then discuss the ideal brew at the blackjack table, then get into the heart of the matter: Russia vs. Canada. After some Alaska talk, we throw to the FDR that was recorded live, pitting two huge barrel aged stouts against each other.

After a triad of beer brags, we get into a quiz about music and movies of yesteryear to much groans and moans. Then we get right into the FDR, which involves a flight of beers that we have wanted to try side-by-side for some time now. The results intrigue to the extent that the ratings system is not robust to handle it.

You know, like the 4th best Cheerios. He also talks Toppling Goliath. Next, we talk about the thrilling world of litigation! That's right, Stone sued MillerCoors and it is/was the talk of the town. Next, we tap into the American Pale Male Mail Pale for an article that was sent to us on low ABV brews overseas. Then we reminsece about SimCity 2000 and real life natural disasters that we have been in. For whatever reason, this makes us thirsty, so it is time for the FDR, where we try an American-made tripel that was previously mentioned on the show before via Counsel of the Great White North of the Show. After a heavy metal diversion, we finally rate it.

Next up, it is a Week in Geek throwback. We talk AGDQ, speedrunning video games, and books. Jeremy is back at it again with the annual reading goal. Then Michael interviews Jeremy about hambugers. Finally, it is the FDR, where we have something dark to match the drab, icy season.

146: Return of the Brewery Blowout

This is a very special episode. No, we aren't dealing with serious issues like drugs or alcoholism as they did in 80s sitcoms, rather it is our first live episode in over a year! With that comes the requisite audio issues, but in turn, we have former cohost of the show, Mike! That's a good trade, right? 144: Geographic Tongue

Themed beer brags! Michael has the citra-loaded King Sue while Jeremy has a Citra Triad flight from Big Grove, including a single, double, and imperial citra IPA. It's cirtamazing! Next, it's the American Pale Male Mail Pail, where a good friend has a question about impaired beer tasting. Not the type of impaired that you would think either. After some talk on beer products, it's off to the FDR!

143: The Year in Beer 2017

It is our end of the year classic, where we look back at 2017 and pick out our favorites. First though, beer brags. Jeremy had something from Ballast Point and Michael had the apt Winter is Here Game of Thrones beer from Ommegang. Next, we look at Google's Year in Search. Jeremy tries to guess what was most searched this year in Movies, Music, and Television. The astrocreeps stop us from going beyond that. Jeremy then recaps what it was like to read 30 books this year, including stats and his fav. Michael mentions a few he read. Then some good 2017 films are discussed. Next, on to the beer. We have awards for various categories and we choose our vaunted Beer of the Year. Who will it be? Finally, we look at 2017's New Beers Resolutions and make some next ones for 2018.
