247: The Year in Beer 2019

Welcome to the end of the year episode. We cut right to the chase, reviewing the beers we had on the show this year and picking our favorites for various categories. Starting off with the lighter "awards", we pick the best beer name of the year, the adjunct of the year, and best bottle/can artwork. We then pick the brewery of the year, worst beer of the year, and then pick our Beer of the Year for 2019. Finally, we go through some highlights for our 2019 episodes and end with our annual New Beers Resolutions.

246: Delightful Fiddledeedee

In the penultimate episode of the year, we take the time to sit back and... do what we usually do every episode. Starting with beer brags, Michael has a Polish bock, with a purportedly secretive process. Jeremy gets down with a coffee brew from Bell's. We then get into some big news (which due to some timey wimey stuff, we are a bit late on) that ripped through the craft brew world a few weeks earlier. Don't worry, our keen insight makes up for the delay in discussion. Right. Next we get into the FDR, which has nothing to do with any of the above, because it is simply the final brew in "The Uniques" series of beers. How will the last contender from mid-Illinois fare?

Welcome to the podcast, with your hosts Michael and Jinglebell Jeremy. JBJ brags about a brut IPA from Firetrucker that he had while watching the Lighthouse. (It is a movie.) Michael recommends "It Was a Fine Luncheon". Due to our lack of wintery beers on the show, despite being in season, we talk winter warmers and hypothesize one of our own. We then discuss "The Bride of Drinkenstein" as a potential sequel to a previous homebrew. Finally we get into the FDR, where we have another one of The Uniques. Do we lambaste kraisins? 244: The Uniques

Michael immediately enters the Tailgates of Hell (the final one for the year), asking Jeremy about Corona. The insipid beer talk is worthwhile though as we get a good tip for cooking chili. Jeremy brags about having the ultimate freshly hopped beer care of Iowa Brewing Company. Then, prefacing a new miniseries, Michael brings up a list of various unique brews that the lads discuss. Jeremy must decide to put it down his gullet or put it down his terlet. Finally, we get into the FDR. Craisins of the Show gifted some brews to us, calling them "The Uniques". This beer is the first in that series of brews.

Jeremy rocks an iron intro. Michael's remembers Grandpa's Got a Gun. Jeremy also shares a beer brag of his own (can you tell that I forgot what it was by that generic statement?) Then we commence to DESTROY ART quiz. God, that doesn't work, but I am not up for thinking of better wordplay. Look, these all can't be winners as you may have surmised and I am just not feeling it this week. However, we were feeling this week's FDR, which got a lengthy review.

242: Pumpkin Crush

Note: Audio is a little wonky in places, but should not be too disruptive.

2nd note: Zwan was a relatively short-lived band headed by Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins fame.

Jeremy starts playing Oblivion and talks about. Michael is surprised that Jeremy started playing the game and more surprised that he actually made the joke segment a reality. Either way, it is good. Michael brags about having the original German eisbock, while Jeremy has a couple of saisons from Wake Brewing. Inspired by Mike's check in, Michael reports on choice pumpkin brews for this year, in a retrospective, why-didn't-we-do-that segment. Perhaps they are suggestions to think about considering the mixed/lackluster ones we had on the show. In the FDR, it's the final pumpkin beer of the year and it comes from a macrobrewery... could the answer been in front of our faces all along?

Uh oh... secrets of the wrestling ring revealed with this ep. Wrestler X Jeremy spills all the trade secrets before bragging about Radicatz, a NEIPA. Meanwhile, Michael had Jeremy's wedding party gift beer, Snowball Saison, and brags about it. Next, we have questions for Jeremy. Does he wear a hat? Does he like Attack on Titan? An encounter with a drunk scandalous Luigi (that should have been the episode title) is revealed. Finally we get into the FDR, where high hopes might be dashed upon the rocks of the shoreline. It is hard to get the spices just right.

240: Pumpkin Meat

We are doing pretty, well... well this ep. Michael recovers from a nasty nasty "brew" that he had, while Jeremy mirthfully recalls the flight he had at the Peace Tree taproom. Next, we get into a long overdue Brews News segment, focusing on Founders and then transitioning to the FDR brewery, which made its own newsworthy waves earlier in the year. Clean the biofilm from your mucus membranes, because we have another pumpkin beer to try.

239: Pumpkin Flesh

We are back, both Michael and the Evergreen Jeremy. EGJ opens with a "King" brag before transitioning to the obligatory beer brag, which involves a light beer that clocks in at over 8% ABV. Michael then puts a bow on the previous month, getting into final thoughts on the Oktoberfest style and bragging about two that he had. We then switch gears, getting into a topic literally adjacent to this week's brewery... ancient pyramids hidden under a lake in Wisconsin. Michael introduces sources that go deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole. Before going mad, we escape to the FDR, kicking off an entire month of pumpkin beers! (exclaimation point)

Jeremy has a new IPA from New Belgium (apparently voted in by the crowd) which he gives tepid accolades. We talk local GABF winners, which devolves into complaining about conventions. Then we get into the FDR, where another Oktoberfest graces our studios. Like the others, this one gets weird.

Yes yes, bad evening to one and all. Jeremy has a trivia misadventure while confirming last week's rating. Michael tries Ruthie's balancing act. Dark Lord is not so lordy. Ok, now that the chungus is out of the way, onto what we've all been waiting for: The 1st Annual Lawnmower Man Awards. We pick a winner after much ricititude, debate, and... 3-2-1 contact! I can't tell you the winner here though, you have to listen. We then get into the FDR where one of the Big Six straddles the style line to deliver a nicely balanced triangle of flavor. O'zapft is!

234: Satanical Botanicals

After a seamless absence, we are back. Jeremy and Michael regale all with tales from the wedding, including a beer analysis, both financial and flavorful. Jeremy also details into his botanical booze bonanza that he received for wedding gifts. Interior crocodile alligator, Jeremy went to a new movie thee-ater. He had Stone's NEIPA, but brushes it aside to laud the new film digs. Michael teases the upcoming 1st Annual Lawn Mower Man Awards. We then get into the FDR, where a transcontinental collaboration attempts to harmonize American and German Oktoberfests. Does it succeed?

An impromptu intro spurs a discussion on full "blank" breakfasts, which degenerates into drinking blood. Beer brags saves the day with Michael trying a brew innoculated with Kviek yeast. Jeremy introduces The Tailgates of Hell before describing the lupulin laden Hop Bullet that he had. We then turn to the machine for some respite. In the FDR, we go to an old classic from the old world. No, the other original old classic.

Jeremy does a Victory Dance and sings the praises of Single Speed Brewing. Michael has an ice cream make brag instead of a beer brag. Next we get into the FDR, where the APM Pod World Tour continues through Europe. Will the land of pure beer save us from the "mehs" of FDRs past?

Breaking Action News! There is a beer brags desk. I repeat, there is a beer brags desk. Jeremy's been lugging it all over the globe to supply us with a beer brag. But first, trivia. Jeremy has a question that seemingly nobody that he knows has gotten 100% correct. Can you? We talk sports books before Michael proposes an experiment to get to the bottom of green bottled beers. Jeremy opines on sloshy over-foamed mugs. Then we get into the FDR, where after a history lesson, we split some hairs and pick some nits to parse a so-called French beer.

In the much awaited sequel to Rullepølse Analogy, Jeremy explains his consumption of marshmallow flavored energy drink and ponders his caffeinated future. Then he brags about Big Eddy and some other schweppe IPAs. Michael has found the pinnacle of summer beers. The plane lands in Denmark (that bit is still going) so Jeremy shares some info on Danish delights and beard growing contests. We get into the FDR, which is a bit of a throwback as we go into the country, brewery, and beer a little more than usual, since it is our first foray into the area. Facts abound, will this European pale lager raise or furrow the brows of these malty drinking night drinkers?

We botch the world tour again. We kick it off with some seltzer... brags? And speculate on the future of the beverage, noting some new players in the field, leading to the Akira-like growth of the marketplace. Jeremy almost falls for a 17% ABV hoax. We then get back to beer with the FDR, but is it good enough to save us from seltzer talk? What is happening to the world?

Beer brags. After a live podcast show, Jerome has a brew that combines multiple styles and... wine grapes? Michael has another yella beer, this time a kolsch. Next, we embark on our new series, The American Pale Males World Tour. Ditching the roads of Iowa, we take flight, trying major beer brands from around the globe... or at least seemingly from around the globe. First up is Japan. Michael starts the festivities with the Big in Japan Quiz. Despite sumos, earthquakes, and movies, the digressions start. For example, did you know that Jeremy worked at ShopKo? Michael dumps on an energy drink as it impaired him playing The Resistance. Boozy cherries and zipper flies enter the mix. We finally move on to the FDR. Within, Jeremy attempts to invent a new unit of measurement (instead of simply converting ounces into milliliters), we discuss Malort, and remember Blue Razz? It's back, in Pog form. Oh, and we also have the largest disparity in beer ratings of all time.

We get off to a roaring start. Michael conducts an investigation on post-apocalyptic Goose IPA. This triggers Jeremy to rant about the Pitchfork music festival (there is an apt connection). Jeremy then brags about Reunion IPA. Next, we head to the last stop of our Iowa Roadtrip Series. Of course, we first stop at a few places along the way, including the Statue of Liberty*, the Sword in the Stone*, and the Tom Jones Tribute Bathroom (this one does not require any asterisk). Finally, it is the final FDR for the series finale - where a brut legend from beer brags of yore genteelly glides in and makes its mark.

All hail Plantor, the world's largest trowel. Jeremy finally gets redemption from his elbow and can see Slayer. Michael brings up some Nu Metal chungus, catching Jeremy off guard. Jeremy has a wacky pack, featuring a gelatinous cube and a nice donuty orange hibiscus brew. Michael experiences Deliria. Next stop: Knoxville! Knoxville! (Iowa) for some road side attractions. We visit the Museum of Traffic Control, see the largest Dutch windmill in the US, and see graves of some government mules. No trip is complete without the obligatory Stephen King digression, as we realize that The Shining is the prequel to Up. Eventually, we meander toward the FDR, where a brew evokes memories of the past and some deep discussion.

Jeremy briefly checks in on his "Hook's Books" goal before asking Michael for a beer brag. Michael pivots, talking a couple a beer bombs that he barely dodged when selecting for a flight, including a blueberry infused Spotted Cow. Jeremy responds with something that could be even worse - Lemon Tea Bud Light. He then discusses a coffee IPA he had from Single Speed (returning to brags, not bombs). Starting into the Iowa Road Trip Series, Michael throws out a quiz on Iowan state symbols, adding his own bonus question on an Iowan city west of the Missouri River. We continue on, stopping at places in Waterloo and Decorah.  We check out the Galleria de Paco, The Dan Gable Museum, Decorah's Ice Cave, and Pulpit Rock. We get right into the beer brags, where Michael uncharacteristically has a hazy IPA and Jeremy characteristically has a double IPA. In town, we see the Weenie Plane, Crashing Seagulls, and the Seedling Mile. But it is not just with our eyes that we experience Cedar Rapids, as we also can smell it. Five times. Join us as we find out why Trent Reznor is happy. Jeremy brags about a Reunion Hefe and a Firestone hazy. Michael opens the American Pale Mail Pail to talk eye openers and a new brew idea (remember Belgian IPAs?) Since jabroni summer is in full swing, we bring up lawnmower beers yet again, floating the idea of an annual award. Jeremy blames Michael for the poor FDR selection, but we are shocked when we taste it. We open up with some tornado talk, recalling our post-tornado walkabout from days of yore. Jeremy also remembers an unofficial tornado drink, before bragging about finally getting his hands on a Brut IPA that can stand toe to toe with the Brut IPA legend. After an interruption from some non-RVD rolling thunder, we get into the FDR and the primary hop within, but are immediately sidetracked by Velvet Revolver. Jeremy comes up with a new invention for the Shark Tank before we give our Pick of the Pack Lock of the Week for this sample pack from Stone.

Now entering Old Man Corner, it's the APM Podcast. Jeremy goes over the Dark Lord Variants, one of which he will have by the time this airs. Jeremy discusses a IBC barrel aged beer made with Vietnamese coffee. Since we are finally on a more contemporary schedule, we talk Avengers Endgame. Then it is trivia time, where we are disappointed in ourselves for knowing so much about pre-2000 pop culture. Finally, we get into the FDR, where a balanced brew slakes thine thirst.
